OpenAI launches the "National Academy for AI Instruction" to train 400,000 teachers in the U.S. by 2030 in artificial intelligence. Partnering with AFT, Microsoft, and others, the initiative aims to integrate AI into classrooms effectively and responsibly.
To enhance teachers’ skills in using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, OpenAI—the creator of ChatGPT—will provide training to educators. Under a program titled the “National Academy for AI Instruction,” OpenAI plans to train 400,000 teachers in the United States by the year 2030 on various aspects of AI.
To deliver this large-scale training in updated AI technology, OpenAI has partnered with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Microsoft, Anthropic, and the United Federation of Teachers.
According to OpenAI, the five-year project aims to teach around 10% of U.S. teachers the strategies for integrating AI into educational practices. A central training hub will be established in New York, with regional centers across the country to support the rollout.
Speaking about the new initiative, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “Teachers are the primary drivers of change. The path to using AI in classrooms must be led by them. We want to stand by them on this journey.”
AFT President Randi Weingarten added, “While AI has immense potential, it also presents complexities and risks. Our responsibility is to ensure this technology is used for the benefit of students.
